Saturday September 10th Irmo cross country competed at the SCTCCA Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic. The field included 95 teams and 3,262 athletes competing.
The boys team finished in 14th place in the elite International division of the meet and 9th out of the 5A schools. The boys were led by podium finisher Jake Mueller (16:33) who came in 14th place. Mueller stuck with the lead pack throughout the entire race and showed that he has the potential to be a top contender. Mueller was the top finisher out of the region teams competing. Hayden Spencer (64th, 18:06) was Irmo’s second finisher. He improved his time from last week to aid Irmo to a solid 2-5 point spread. Zack Kochert (89th, 18:31) fell back behind Spencer after mile one. Kochert is recovering from illness and will look to improve upon his career next week. Hayden Tuten (91st, 18:36) and Silas Arendash (95th, 18:41) followed close behind Kochert to round out the point scorers. Other varisty members included Ward Keith, Tripp Montgomery, Tyler Smith, Dakya McKnight, and Kolby Harrison. This is McKnights and Harrisons first year running cross country and both have shown steady improvement since the beginning of the season. The varsity team will stay the same next week as both boys and girls host the Mike Moore Lake Murray Invitational.
Daniel Gillespie led the underclassman JV boys and Adam DiMaggio led the upperclassman JV boys.
The girls team finished 25th out of 54 teams in the championship division of the race. The girls were led once again by freshman Katy Hall (89th, 22:45). Katie Weber (95th, 22:51) improved her time from last week to finish second for the lady jackets. 7th grader, Hannah Davis was Irmo’s third finisher in 116th with a 23:21 followed by Joey Palmquist and Leyla Ziolkowski who completed their team score. Rookies Jessica King and Carina Burdick raced eachother the entire race to finish in Irmo’s “true” varsity seven. Mackenna Bryant was the girls 8th finisher, she came through in a career best time. Lindsey Knott (PR) and Tanvi Singh also competed in the varsity race.
The JV girls were led by Esha Hegde and Allison Matthews. Next week the varsity girls will have a small change in line-up. Esha Hegde will be competing in the varsity race while Tanvi Singh will look to bounce back and lead the JV race.
